Have government, Congress struck a deal? Akhilesh Yadav fumes over NEET discussion
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav objected in the Lok Sabha after he was not allowed to speak on the NEET-UG paper leak and the crackdown on the July 20 youth protest.

As the Lok Sabha assembled on Wednesday, there was an uproar from the opposition over demands for Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation and a discussion on the NEET paper leak. With the opposition refusing to back down despite an adjournment, Speaker Om Birla allowed members from the BJP and the Congress to speak.
'HAVE YOU REACHED AN UNDERSTANDING?'
At this, a visibly agitated Akhilesh took off his headphones and turned to leave along with his party MPs. Seeing this, the Speaker intervened. "Akhilesh ji, you had also asked to speak. You may speak as well," Birla said.
The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister stressed that the issue was not about the Samajwadi Party, Congress or the BJP, but concerns students and the youth.
"You have allowed them (Congress) and them (BJP) to speak. What about us? Has the government struck a deal? Have you reached some kind of understanding?" a fuming Akhilesh said sarcastically.
"This is not an issue of the Congress, the Samajwadi Party or the BJP. It is an issue concerning the country's students," he said.
An energetic and charged-up Akhilesh soon became the talking point on social media.
Interestingly, Akhilesh made the remarks soon after he took part in a protest with Rahul Gandhi in Parliament against the crackdown on students and the detention of opposition leaders. As a mark of protest, the opposition leaders turned up in black on Wednesday.
Demanding the resignation of the Education Minister, Akhilesh warned that students would take to the streets again if their concerns continued to be ignored.
On Tuesday, the Samajwadi Party chief, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and several other Congress leaders were detained after they staged an unprecedented flash protest near Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence. Akhilesh said they chose to go to the PM's residence as the opposition was left with no other option.
"Rahul Gandhi and I went to the Prime Minister's residence because we had no other option. Had we been allowed to raise the issue in Parliament, we would not have gone there," he further said.
'WILL YOU TEAR CLOTHES OF DAUGHTERS'
He also questioned PM Modi's silence over the "brutal assault" on students who were marching to Parliament on Monday. The 'Sansad Chalo' march, organised by the Cockroach Janta Party, turned violent as the protesters and police fought a pitched battle in the heart of Delhi.
"Can't he (PM Modi) make a statement in Parliament for the country's youth? If he can speak outside, why not inside Parliament? Akhilesh said.
Raising the plight of the protesters, Akhilesh said several students suffered broken bones and injuries to their heads during the crackdown.
"The clothes of women students were torn, students were hit with lathis... Their limbs were broken. Is this the way to treat our students?" the Samajwadi Party MP said. "Will you tear the clothes of our daughters? Is this the way to treat them?"
Before Akhilesh Yadav intervened, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the government was fully prepared for a discussion on the NEET paper leak issue from Day 1 of the session and blamed the opposition for the delay.
"For three days we have been offering that the government is absolutely ready to discuss the NEET paper leak issue," Rijiju said.
"When the discussion is to be held, the duration of the discussion and under what rule the discussion is to be held should be decided after speaking with floor leaders of all parties," Rijiju said.
However, Congress leader KC Venugopal was quick to cut him short. Venugopal asserted that the Opposition was also seeking the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan.
