Conservative estimates despite massive buzz
Trade analyst Ramesh Bala, speaking exclusively to India Today Digital, said: "In India, Jana Nayagan might collect up to Rs 50 to Rs 60 crore on Day 1. The worldwide gross could range between Rs 75 to Rs 80 crore."
While these estimates are lower than Vijay's previous films, Bala said several factors have to be taken into account.
He said, "This could be because of the film being leaked. Right now, trade analysts are making conservative estimates due to the leak, long delay and certain other issues."
At the same time, he believes the film still has room to grow after release.
"But, there are chances that the collection might pick up pace due to word of mouth towards the weekend. One has to wait and see how the reactions from the first shows work in favour of the film," he added.
How the A certificate could affect collections
Apart from piracy, Bala pointed out that the film's A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification could also impact its theatrical performance.
"The film getting A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is also working against the film. In A centres, theatres will not allow children into the cinema halls. Theatres in B and C centres can be relaxed when it comes to the rule of allowing children into the halls. It was the same case with Rajinikanth's Coolie, which also received an A certificate."
He added that the leak remains one of the biggest concerns surrounding the film.
"The leak definitely has an impact on Jana Nayagan. Vijay's 2023 film Leo made over Rs 600 crore while 2025-film The Greatest of All Time aka GOAT made over Rs 400 crore. Right now, the situation doesn't look like there will be a repeat audience for Jana Nayagan because of the leak. I read a report that nearly 1.2 crore people have already watched the pirated version. So, we have to wait and see if Jana Nayagan will benefit from repeat watches. The leak, A certificate and the seven-month delay have to be factored," he explained.
'We're underestimating the craze'
Not everyone in the trade is as cautious.
Ruban Mathivanan, owner of Chennai theatre GK Cinemas, believes the excitement surrounding Vijay's farewell film remains intact despite the piracy controversy.
"I think we're underestimating the craze. Of course, the film leaked, but the demand for the tickets remain the same. The demand is literally the same how it was in January. As H Vinoth said, this is a Vijay padam, and fans want to celebrate the star for one last time," he said.
For him, Jana Nayagan is more than just another Vijay release.
"Jana Nayagan is a tribute to Vijay and fans will leave no stone unturned in celebrating the legend who entertained people for 33 years," said Ruban.
'A vacuum that can never be filled'
A distributor, requesting anonymity, echoed similar sentiments, arguing that Vijay's star power has historically remained unaffected by reviews.
"Vijay films are always blockbusters at the box office, even if they receive mixed reviews. Distributors and exhibitors have benefited for several years whenever Vijay film is released. Now, him leaving the industry will create a vacuum that can never be filled. There are hardly a few actors who have the box office pull like Vijay. And it is sad to see him leave cinema at the peak of his career. However, he is now serving the public, something he always wanted. So, we have to abide by it and wish him luck," the source said.
