Driver's viral gun photo triggers police action; Rs 3 crore cash found during raid
Police searching a Sagar house for an illegal weapon found around Rs 3 crore inside a locked cupboard. The recovery has triggered a wider probe into the source and ownership of the cash.

Police searching for an illegal weapon at a house in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district stumbled upon cash worth around Rs 3 crore hidden inside a locked cupboard, prompting a wider probe into the source and ownership of the money.
The recovery was made on Sunday in the Gopalganj, where officers had gone to verify photographs allegedly showing a man posing with a pistol on social media.
According to police, they have been screening social media profiles that feature people displaying firearms or other weapons. During the exercise, officers identified two profiles allegedly containing photographs with pistols and launched separate verification drives.
POLICE TEAM CAME TO SEARCH GUN
As part of the investigation, a police team reached the residence of Saurabh Ahirwar to search for the suspected weapon. While no firearm was immediately recovered, officers found a locked cupboard during the search.
Police said the family did not have the key to the cupboard. It was subsequently opened in the presence of witnesses following due procedure. Inside, officers found four bags stuffed with bundles of currency notes.
The amount of cash was so large that police had to call for an electronic currency-counting machine to complete the counting process. The exercise, which began in the afternoon, continued until around midnight and was videographed to document the recovery.
Preliminary estimates put the total cash recovered at over Rs 3 crore, with one of the bags alone reportedly containing around Rs 1.33 crore.
CASH NOT OURS: FAMILY
During questioning, family members claimed that the cash did not belong to them. They told police that the money belonged to their relative, Ramesh Ahirwar, who had allegedly kept it at the house around eight to nine months ago.
According to the family, Ramesh Ahirwar lives in the Chunabhatti area of Bhopal and works as an engineer with the Public Works Department (PWD).
Police, however, said the family's claim was being verified and that the ownership and source of the cash had not yet been established. Investigators are examining whether there are any bank records, financial documents or other evidence to explain the origin of the money and why such a large amount was stored at the house.
Senior police officers also reached the spot during the operation and questioned family members. Officials said the seized cash would be handed over to the appropriate authorities, while agencies such as the Income Tax Department may also be informed as part of the investigation.
The probe is underway to determine the ownership, source and legality of the recovered cash.
