A line is crossed: Actor Nikitin Dheer on why he turns down negative roles
Actor Nikitin Dheer said he has refused several negative roles over how violence was shown. He explained how he is concerned about the impact of such roles on younger audience.
Actor Nikitin Dheer says he has turned down several negative roles in his career because he wasn't comfortable with the way violence was portrayed. In an exclusive interview with India Today, the Raktanchal 3 actor shared that while he enjoys playing grey characters, he draws the line at violence that he feels is unnecessary. He also spoke about why he believes OTT has become the preferred platform for both audiences and actors.
Elaborating on what influences his choices, Dheer said he has consciously stayed away from roles that glorify violence without a meaningful purpose.
"Yes, many times. I don't want to name them. All the characters I've played have given me a big fan base among children. I've been fortunate that my characters have been liked by children, so I keep that in mind," he said.
The 46-year-old actor explained that while he enjoys portraying grey characters, he believes the impact such roles can have on younger audiences cannot be ignored.
"I do consciously try to take up negative, intense and violent roles. But there's a line that I feel is sometimes unnecessarily crossed, and I don't think it looks aesthetically pleasing on screen," he said.
The Chennai Express actor added that his biggest filter while choosing projects is whether he, as an audience member, would enjoy watching them.
"I usually listen to a subject as a viewer. I ask myself, 'Would I like to watch something like this?' I always look at it from that perspective. Whatever I don't understand, I don't do. And if I don't do it, I don't regret it. Whoever eventually does it, good luck to them and I always wish them the same," he added.
Speaking about the changing entertainment landscape, Dheer said the rise of OTT platforms reflects evolving audience preferences.
I think the way audiences are changing today has a lot to do with it. People have gone from watching videos to consuming shorts and reels. Attention spans have become shorter," Dheer said.
He believes that finite web series are easier for viewers to commit to than long-running television shows. "With OTT, when a show has nine or 10 episodes and audiences know that's all they have to watch, there's a certain commitment they can make. But when you look at long-format television, like the kind actors Karan Patel and others have done with 500 or 600 episodes, I feel lot of audiences today don't want to make that kind of commitment any more. I think that's one of the reasons OTT is doing well,” he concluded.
