Renuka Shahane wants to reunite and direct Ashutosh Rana in a black comedy
Renuka Shahane shared her dream of directing her actor-husband Ashutosh Rana in a black comedy. She also talked about filmmaking, financial discipline and the stories she wants to tell next.
Renuka Shahane said she wants to reunite with and direct her husband, actor Ashutosh Rana, in a black comedy she has been writing for a long time. Speaking to India Today after being seen in the Marathi web series Aga Aai Aaho Aai, Shahane also spoke about how she looks at creative freedom, budgets and the kind of stories she wants to tell next.
Shahane said the idea of complete creative freedom does not mean unlimited money for her. She said she believes in working within a budget, using resources with care and avoiding waste, even though some situations may require additional spending while making a film.
Speaking about her next directorial ambition, the 59-year-old said, “The next thing that I want to do is... actually, I have been working for the longest time on a black comedy that I’ve been writing, in which I want to direct (Ashutosh Rana) Ranaji again. So that’s something I would love to do next.”
Ashutosh and Renuka got married on May 25, 2001, and have two sons, Shauryaman and Satyendra.
Asked about a genre she has not explored but would like to, Shahane said horror has always interested her. “I have never explored horror. I have never been part of a horror film, neither have I written anything. That’s a genre which is very interesting. My elder son just loves horror. So, at some point in time, I will definitely dabble in it,” she said.
Creative freedom and money
When asked what story she would tell if she had complete creative freedom and unlimited resources, Shahane said limitless money did not appeal to her. “Oh my God! Unlimited resources are not a great thing. Too much money—I don’t know what to do with it,” she said.
Explaining her view, she added, “No, because you tend to spend it on all the wrong things. I think it’s a very good thing to budget a certain amount and then stay within that budget.”
She said there can be situations where a film may need more money than planned, but discipline still matters. “Of course, there are exigencies where you may require some amount over the budget to make the film. But I think one should limit oneself. Why should we have limitless money? Around us, that’s not something that exists. There is no money to waste, let’s put it that way,” she said.
What shaped her thinking
Shahane said her approach to money comes from her upbringing. “That’s a quality my mother has actually given me—to be very intentional, to think about it, to value it, but not to be greedy about it. Value whatever you have, but don’t be greedy. So, I would say one should budget,” she said.
