Tencent sacks employee after his Rs 4.4 crore pay package leaked online
Tencent has fired a WeChat manager after details of his Rs 4.4 crore annual compensation package leaked online. The employee was also reportedly blacklisted from working at the company again.
A senior employee at Chinese tech giant Tencent has reportedly lost his job after details of his hefty annual compensation package surfaced online, turning what appears to have been an internal pay disclosure into a widely discussed topic on Chinese social media. The employee, identified only by his surname Ye, was a project manager at Tencent’s Weixin Group, the division behind WeChat. According to a report by the South China Morning Post, Tencent dismissed Ye after accusing him of sharing sensitive company information with people outside the organisation.
An internal notice issued by Tencent’s Anti-Corruption Investigation Department said the disclosure had caused a “severe negative impact both inside and outside the company”. The notice was reportedly seen by three Tencent employees.
The controversy began after a screenshot showing Ye’s compensation package started circulating online. The image, which appears to have been taken from an internal Tencent platform, showed that Ye received an annual compensation package of around 3.17 million yuan, or roughly Rs 4.4 crore.
A large portion of the package came through bonuses and stock incentives. The screenshot showed a cash bonus of more than 820,000 yuan, while stock incentives were valued at over 2.35 million yuan.
The salary details quickly became a talking point on Chinese social media, but the disclosure appears to have had serious consequences for the employee. Tencent not only dismissed Ye but also permanently blacklisted him from future employment at the company.
The internal notice said Tencent would issue a separate formal circular with further details about the disciplinary action taken against Ye for violating the company's rules on executive conduct.

The company’s action was not officially described as a punishment for the size of Ye’s compensation. Instead, Tencent accused him of passing sensitive corporate information to external parties.
Tencent has strict rules around confidential information. These rules cover trade secrets, internal communications, unreleased source code and employee records, among other sensitive data.
The incident also comes as Tencent continues to tighten internal compliance. In its annual corporate report released in January, the company said its anti-corruption unit had revealed more than 70 compliance violations during 2025.
Those investigations resulted in more than 90 employees being dismissed. More than 20 people were also handed over to law enforcement agencies for criminal prosecution, according to the report.
Ye worked within Weixin Group, Tencent's core business unit responsible for WeChat. The messaging and super-app platform has around 1.3 billion users and is one of the company's most important products.
