Arvind Kejriwal, family get notices as Delhi voter records fail to match past SIR data

Former Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal and four members of his family have been served notices by the Delhi Election Commission under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.

The notices have been issued under the “Unmapped with Last SIR” category, according to information available as part of the exercise.

Kejriwal, his wife Sunita Kejriwal, his father Gobind Ram Kejriwal and his mother Gita Devi have been served notices. His 25-year-old son Pulkit Kejriwal has also received a notice under the same category.

The five members of the Kejriwal family are among 110 people who have been served notices in the specific part segment of Assembly Constituency 40, which covers the New Delhi constituency.

WHY WERE KEJRIWAL, FAMILY SERVED NOTICES?

The Electoral Registration Officer (ERO), New Delhi, said the Enumeration Forms submitted by Kejriwal and his family members did not contain complete details needed to link them with the electoral rolls from the last revision in their respective states.

“The submitted Enumeration Forms were not complete in terms of details which would have enabled linkage of themselves with the electoral roll of last revision of respective states, which were not present in their submitted Enumeration Forms,” the ERO said in a press statement.

The ERO said notices were being issued in accordance with procedures established and communicated by the Election Commission of India.

“Notices are being issued to the electors, who could not be linked with the electoral roll of last revision and those having logical discrepancies in their linking with the electoral roll of last revision,” the statement said.

The ERO said electors who receive notices have to submit their replies and requisite documents to the concerned Electoral Registration Officer. The disposal of the notices will be completed by October 29, 2026.

WHO ARE UNMAPPED VOTERS UNDER SIR?

Under the SIR exercise, an unmapped voter is a person whose current electoral-roll details can not be matched with the corresponding details in the previous SIR electoral roll. Such voters are being asked to provide documents to establish their eligibility and verify their electoral records.

The ERO's clarification indicates that a notice under this category requires the elector to provide the information or documents necessary for the linkage to be established.

The Election Commission has also identified mapped voters who have logical discrepancies in details such as their names or dates of birth. Notices are being issued in both categories as part of the verification process.

CM REKHA GUPTA ALSO RECEIVED NOTICE

The Election Commission has also said that Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta received a notice after her name appeared in the list of discrepancies during the ongoing SIR of electoral rolls.

The Commission said Gupta's details and documents were subsequently verified and her electoral entry was validated. Her name will be included in the Final Electoral Roll for Assembly Constituency 14 (Shalimar Bagh), scheduled to be published on November 4, 2026.

AAP QUESTIONS ELECTION COMMISSION

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) questioned the Election Commission after former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, his wife Sunita Kejriwal, son Pulkit Kejriwal and parents were flagged as “unmapped with last SIR” during the revision of Delhi’s electoral rolls.

In a post on X, the party sarcastically questioned the Election Commission over the development and suggested that the action was politically motivated.

“Is everything happening in this country just to keep the Supreme Lord happy? @ECISVEEP, how is it possible that the names of three-time Delhi Chief Minister @ArvindKejriwal Ji and his family members are missing from the Delhi voter list?” AAP said.

KEJRIWAL HAD EARLIER CRITICISED SIR

The notices to Arvind Kejriwal and his family come amid a wider exercise in Delhi that has drawn political attention. Kejriwal, who served as Delhi chief minister three times, is the national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party.

On August 31, Kejriwal had questioned the SIR exercise after the draft electoral roll excluded the names of more than 47 lakh voters. In a post on X, he said that of around 1.5 crore voters in Delhi, 47 lakh names were missing from the draft roll.

Taking a swipe at the Centre, Kejriwal said the government need not be concerned about population growth because the SIR exercise could reduce the country’s population from 140 crore to 50 crore.

DELHI SIR: ENUMERATION AND CLAIMS PROCESS

The SIR exercise in Delhi involved door-to-door verification of electors. Enumeration forms for around 67.18 per cent of Delhi's electors were received and digitised during the exercise, which began on June 30 and concluded on August 17.

The extent of digitisation varied across the capital's 70 Assembly constituencies. Rohini recorded the highest rate at 83.43 per cent, while Tughlakabad recorded the lowest at 52.15 per cent.

Voters whose enumeration forms were not received during the exercise can still seek inclusion in the electoral roll. They can submit claims using Form 6 along with the required supporting documents until September 30.

CAMPS SET UP FOR CLAIMS AND OBJECTIONS

Delhi Chief Electoral Officer Ashok Kumar said on Saturday that the Election Commission had published a list of discrepancies identified during the SIR and was issuing notices to voters to submit supporting documents.

Kumar said the list included “unmapped voters” as well as voters whose details had been mapped to the previous electoral roll but contained discrepancies in their names, dates of birth or other particulars.

He said teams of electoral roll officers were conducting camps to hear claims and objections submitted by voters. The number of camps would be increased if required, he added.
