Ajay Devgn silences Kapil Sharma's Goa joke with an alcohol jibe

Actor Ajay Devgn turned the tables on comedian Kapil Sharma during a promotional appearance for Drishyam: The Conclusion on Netflix’s The Great Indian Kapil Show Season 5. The retort came after the host teased him about his repeated visits to Goa. What began as a joke about Devgn’s films being set or shot in the coastal state ended with the actor making a sharp personal remark about Kapil’s past association with alcohol.

Devgn appeared on the show with Shriya Saran, Jaideep Ahlawat, Ishita Dutta and Mrunal Jadhav to promote the film, which marks the final chapter of the Drishyam franchise. During the exchange, Kapil linked Devgn’s long list of Goa-based films to feni and pomfret, but Devgn responded by saying he did not drink feni (a local Goan drink) before using the joke to reference Kapil’s own past.

“Most of Ajay Devgn’s films, Golmaal, Singham, Drishyam, they all have been shot in Goa. In fact, the trailer of Drishyam: The Conclusion, was released in Goa. So, a few people have this question, it’s not my question, ‘Do you really find Goa beautiful or you believe that you don’t get better feni anywhere else or the pomfret is cheaper there? What is the reason?’” Kapil said.

Devgn replied, “Goa is very relaxing, and I don’t drink feni.” When Kapil followed it up by saying Devgn could at least get feni for someone else, the actor hit back with, “Teri life mein feni ne bahut gadbad ki hai pehli hi, yaad rakhna (Remember, Feni has already really messed things up in your life).”

Kapil quickly clarified, “Main nahin feni peeta” (I don’t drink feni), before turning to Archana Puran Singh. She added, “Free mein tujhe kuch bhi mil jaaye tu pi lega (You’ll drink anything that you get for free).” Kapil then continued with the Goa-themed banter, saying Devgn was lucky because he gets paid to visit a place that burns a hole in the pockets of ordinary tourists. He also joked that while Goa is known for its beaches and forts, Drishyam made its pav bhaji famous.

Devgn’s feni remark referred to a phase in Kapil’s life that the comedian has spoken about publicly. Kapil had earlier spoken about excessive drinking and how it led him to post a series of impulsive tweets, including one aimed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In his 2022 stand-up special I’m Not Done Yet, Kapil recalled getting drunk before tweeting, “ARE THESE YOUR GOOD DAYS? @NARENDRAMODI”, and joked about the backlash that followed.

Devgn also had another one-liner on the show when Kapil brought director Abhishek Pathak into a discussion about the franchise and asked whether Kajol would have made him reveal everything if she had been cast in the first film. Referring to Kajol, Kapil asked, “Abhishek sir, if you had cast Kajol ma’am in the first part, don’t you think she would have made you spill everything right there?” Devgn replied, “The first film wouldn’t have been made!”

The episode marked the opening of Season 5 of The Great Indian Kapil Show. It also includes Sunil Grover mimicking Devgn, while Jaideep joins Krushna Abhishek and Kiku Sharda in the revived Sona and Mona act. Navjot Singh Sidhu praised Devgn’s style, saying, “Bolta nahi, par jab bolta hai jaandaar, wazandaar (He doesn't speak, but when he speaks, it carries weight).” Kapil also joked about his equation with Devgn, saying, “I have known Ajay, sir, for the last 15 years, and we have spoken only 14 times. ‘I am fine. How are you?’ That’s all we said in the film too. ‘I am fine. How are you?’”

Drishyam: The Conclusion is scheduled to release on October 2.
