At launch of the new Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+, Mercedes-Benz India said the company wanted its cars to remain ready for future fuel norms rather than react after they are introduced.
With discussions around E25 gaining momentum, the company decided to ensure that its latest models would already be compatible if and when higher ethanol blends become the norm.
Comes amid discussions on fuel quality
The announcement also follows recent conversations around ethanol-blended fuels in India.
Earlier this month, Mercedes-Benz had pointed out that the bigger concern for premium vehicles is not ethanol blending itself, but inconsistent fuel quality and the risk of adulteration. The company stressed that maintaining uniform fuel standards would become increasingly important as India gradually adopts higher ethanol blends.
By making its vehicles E25-ready in advance, Mercedes-Benz says it has ensured that future fuel policy changes will not require customers to upgrade or replace their cars.
Multi-powertrain strategy remains unchanged
The announcement was made alongside the launch of the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+, the first electrified AMG E-Class in India.
Mercedes-Benz reiterated that it has no plans to rely on a single propulsion technology. Instead, the company will continue offering a broad mix of internal combustion engine (ICE), hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric vehicles, allowing customers to choose a powertrain based on their driving needs.
According to the company, India's premium car market continues to see healthy demand across all propulsion technologies, reinforcing its strategy of remaining "powertrain agnostic" rather than pushing only electric vehicles.
AMG E 53 Hybrid also debuts in India
The E25 announcement coincided with the introduction of the new Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+, priced at Rs 1.45 crore for the Performance Edition and Rs 1.48 crore for the Racing Edition (both ex-showroom).
The plug-in hybrid performance sedan combines a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor, producing 585hp and 750Nm in standard operation. With the Race Start function activated, peak output rises to 612hp.
A 28.6kWh battery pack (21.2kWh usable) enables an electric-only driving range of over 100km (WLTP). The electric motor can power the sedan at speeds of up to 140kmph, while an 11kW AC onboard charger is offered as standard.
With its latest announcement, Mercedes-Benz has not only expanded its electrified performance portfolio but has also positioned itself ahead of India's evolving ethanol roadmap. While E25 fuel is yet to become a reality at fuel stations, customers buying a new Mercedes-Benz today won't have to worry if and when that transition eventually arrives.
