Illinois Tech Mumbai gets UGC nod, becomes first US university campus in India
Illinois Tech has received UGC approval to begin operations and enrol students at its Mumbai campus from September 2026. The move makes it the first US university to offer US degrees in India and expands access to industry-linked technology education.

Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech) has received the University Grants Commission's (UGC) Letter of Approval (LoA), for the launch of its Mumbai campus. The approval enables the US-based technology-focused research university to begin academic operations and enrol students for its first batch starting in September 2026.
Applications for the inaugural Fall 2026 intake are now open. Prospective students can apply for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and access information on admissions, scholarships, faculty and campus life through the university's website at iit.edu/mumbai.
PROGRAMMES TO BE OFFERED, CURRICULUM
Illinois Tech Mumbai will offer undergraduate programmes in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Business and Engineering, along with postgraduate courses designed for an innovation-driven economy. The curriculum will combine academic rigour with project-based learning, interdisciplinary collaboration and industry engagement, with classes conducted in technology-enabled learning spaces.
The university said the Mumbai campus has been established to meet India's growing demand for graduates with advanced technical skills, global exposure and industry-ready expertise. As India expands its digital economy and strengthens its position as a global innovation hub, Illinois Tech aims to bring its technology-led education model, experiential learning approach and close industry partnerships to students in the country.
"Illinois Tech Mumbai marks a transformative milestone in global higher education," said Mallik Sundharam, Vice President, Illinois Institute of Technology.
"As India emerges as one of the world's leading innovation and technology hubs, students increasingly seek an education that combines global standards with India's dynamic innovation ecosystem. By bringing an American, technology-focused education to India, we are enabling students to earn a globally recognised U.S. degree while benefiting from interdisciplinary learning, experiential education and close collaboration with industry."
He said graduates would be equipped with technical expertise, an entrepreneurial mindset and a global perspective to contribute to India's economic growth and pursue careers with multinational companies and emerging technology firms worldwide.
The university said the Mumbai campus reflects its long-standing mission of expanding access to globally recognised US education while supporting India's growing technology and innovation ecosystem.
