Saptarshi Mukherjee bags President's Gold Medal as IIT Guwahati confers 2,265 degrees
IIT Guwahati awarded degrees to 2,265 students at its 28th convocation on Sunday. The ceremony also highlighted medal winners, research expansion and the institute's AI-focused academic push.

Saptarshi Mukherjee, a B.Tech. student in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, received the President of India Gold Medal for securing the highest cumulative performance index among the undergraduate batch as the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati awarded degrees to 2,265 students across undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes during its 28th Convocation Ceremony on Sunday.
The graduating batch included 932 B.Tech. students, 50 Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) students, 556 M.Tech. students, 60 Master of Design (M.Des.) students, 412 PhD and Dual (Master's + PhD) scholars, 170 M.Sc. students, 44 M.A. students, 14 MS (Research) students, and 27 MBA students.
Atri Chattopadhyay of Electronics and Electrical Engineering was awarded the Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal for overall proficiency. Sarthak Kapoor of Computer Science and Engineering received the Governor of Assam Gold Medal for undergraduate excellence, while Praneel Bhattacharya of Chemical Engineering was honoured with the Governor of Assam Gold Medal for postgraduate excellence.
The institute also presented 18 Institute Silver Medals to students for their academic performance.
Dr. Shivkumar Kalyanaraman, Chief Executive Officer of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), attended the ceremony as the chief guest.
The event was presided over by Dr. Prahlada Rama Rao, Acting Chairman of the Board of Governors, IIT Guwahati, while Director Prof. Devendra Jalihal presented the institute's annual report.
Congratulating the graduating students, Prof. Jalihal said they would contribute to society through careers in higher education, industry, entrepreneurship, administration, management, and academia.
He added that the institute published 2,478 research papers during the past year and is expanding its research facilities, incubation ecosystem, and student support services.
IIT Guwahati is also reviewing its undergraduate curriculum to strengthen experiential learning and industry engagement.
The institute said it is currently working on 290 research and consultancy projects worth nearly 300 crore. It has also launched a new M.Tech. programme in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence in line with the National Education Policy 2020.
IIT Guwahati has expanded collaborations with universities in the United Kingdom and Japan to promote research, artificial intelligence, healthcare, and student mobility.
Established over three decades ago, IIT Guwahati has produced more than 26,790 graduates and continues to strengthen its research, innovation, and entrepreneurship ecosystem.
