The monsoon has brought flooding to many parts of North India. At IIT Roorkee, it has also produced a scene straight out of a movie.

A video recorded on the campus shows a group of people travelling across a flooded stretch on a large wooden plank instead of walking through knee-deep water. Two people stand at either end, using long sticks to steer the makeshift raft, while others, some holding umbrellas, balance on top as they make their way across the waterlogged road.

Adding the perfect finishing touch is the background music: My Heart Will Go On from Titanic.

FLOODED CAMPUS, CREATIVE COMMUTE

The video was shared by Gangmei Gaichunglu, an IIT Roorkee student, who said the journey was from her hostel area to the department building for classes.

The visuals suggest that this improvised arrangement was being used to help people cross heavily waterlogged sections of the campus without wading through the floodwater.

Waterlogging in a IIT Roorkee lawn

NORTH INDIA BATTERED BY HEAVY RAIN

The clip comes after two days of intense rainfall across North India. Heavy showers have caused widespread waterlogging and flooding in parts of Uttarakhand, Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, with authorities issuing weather alerts and responding to rain-related disruptions. The IIT Roorkee campus was among the places affected by the downpour.

While the rains have disrupted daily life in several regions, the plank ride at IIT Roorkee has added a memorable monsoon moment. Between umbrellas, wooden poles and a Titanic soundtrack, the flooded campus briefly looked less like an engineering institute and more like a slow-moving boat ride. Venice, anyone?
