Does India hold a place among Asia's top 10 universities?

The QS World University Rankings 2027 place Singapore, Hong Kong and China at the forefront of Asia's higher education. While no Indian university features in the top 10, IIT Delhi leads India at 30th, followed by IIT Bombay and IIT Madras.

Every year, thousands of students apply to universities in India and abroad after completing school, hoping to secure admission to some of the world's best institutions. While India is home to several prestigious universities, only a handful feature prominently in global rankings.

According to the QS World University Rankings 2027, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has emerged as India's highest-ranked university. The institute climbed five places from last year's ranking, rising from 123rd in 2026 to 118th globally in 2027, with an overall score of 65.7.

Only three Indian institutions managed to secure a place among the world's top 200 universities this year. IIT Delhi ranked 118th globally, followed by IIT Bombay at 134th and IIT Madras at 170th.

But how does India fare when compared with the rest of Asia? Does any Indian university make it to the continent's top 10? Based on the QS World University Rankings 2027 filtered for Asia, here are the top 10 universities in the region.

The QS World University Rankings 2027 show that Singapore, Hong Kong, and China dominate Asia's top 10 universities, accounting for eight of the 10 spots. The National University of Singapore leads the list, followed by the University of Hong Kong and Nanyang Technological University.

The rankings also highlight that the region's top institutions excel in academic reputation, employability, and internationalisation. No Indian university features in Asia's top 10, despite IIT Delhi being India's highest-ranked university globally in the 2027 QS rankings, indicating room for improvement in regional competitiveness.

WHAT ABOUT INDIAN UNIVERSITIES?

While no Indian university has made it to Asia's top 10 in the QS World University Rankings 2027, several premier institutions have strengthened their position in the regional rankings, reflecting steady progress in research, employability, and global reputation.

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) remains the highest-ranked Indian institution, securing the 30th position in Asia with an overall score of 65.7. It is followed by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) at 33rd with a score of 63.9, while the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) ranks 43rd with an overall score of 59.3.

Among the three, IIT Delhi stands out for its research impact, scoring an impressive 97.3 in Citations per Faculty. It also earned 96.9 in Employer Reputation, 64.6 in Academic Reputation, 66.5 in International Research Network, 59.6 in Employment Outcomes, and 81.2 in Sustainability.

IIT Bombay delivered a strong performance across employability indicators, recording 97.8 in Employer Reputation and 78.2 in Employment Outcomes. It also scored 79.3 in Citations per Faculty, 72.5 in Academic Reputation, 42.1 in International Research Network, and 79.4 in Sustainability.

IIT Madras also performed well in research, achieving 95.3 in Citations per Faculty. The institute received 87.4 in Employer Reputation, 55.1 in Academic Reputation, 53.2 in Employment Outcomes, 52.2 in International Research Network, and 74.8 in Sustainability.

Although India's leading institutions continue to improve their performance across key QS indicators, none has yet broken into Asia's top 10. The highest positions in the regional rankings continue to be occupied by universities from Singapore, Hong Kong, and mainland China, highlighting the gap Indian institutions still need to bridge to compete with Asia's top-performing universities.
