Soon after that, the accused was caught by local residents and handed over to the police. They also blocked a road to express their anger over the crime.

The locals have alleged police negligence in the matter, claiming that personnel stationed at a police post barely 300 metres from the crime scene failed to reach the spot promptly despite being informed about the body soon after it was found.

Taking note of the grievance, a senior police officer ordered the suspension of the in-charge of the concerned petrol post. The protest by locals brought traffic to a standstill on the Chorgola–Hailakandi connecting road.

The tense atmosphere prompted the police to call in reinforcements to prevent the situation from deteriorating further. Police officials persuaded the protesters to lift the blockade so that normal traffic could be restored on the road.

With the situation gradually brought under control, Zakir Alam was taken into custody and transferred to the nearest police station for further legal proceedings.
