Railways pilots AI cameras to detect stains in washed train linen: Govt to Rajya Sabha
The Indian Railways has launched an AI-camera stain detection pilot in select laundries to check washed linen quality. The move adds to Whito-meter audits and CCTV monitoring as the railways try to improve passenger comfort.
Indian Railways has started a pilot project using automated AI-camera stain detection technology in laundries to check the quality of washed linen, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply. The pilot is being carried out in Pune Division under Central Railway and in Jaipur and Jodhpur divisions under North Western Railway.
The issue was raised by Congress MP Chandrakant Handore, who asked about the washing of woollen blankets only once a month while bedsheets are washed after every journey. He also sought the status of mechanised and BOOT (Build-Own-Operate-Transfer) laundries that use automated AI-camera stain detection technology and Whito-meters to audit linen cleanliness.
Vaishnaw said each bedroll packet contains two bedsheets, one pillow cover and a hand towel. He said, "One bedsheet is intended for keeping it on the sleeper seat while the additional bedsheet provided in the standard bedroll kit is intended as a covering layer under the blanket so that the blanket is not in direct touch with the body of the passenger."
He added, "This blanket cover sheet is washed after single use." Vaishnaw said that, as a pilot initiative to improve passenger experience, blanket covers are being provided to all AC class passengers in trains operated by North Western Railway and in the newly launched Vande Bharat Sleeper Train operating between Kamakhya and Howrah.
He said, "This initiative has been widely appreciated by the passengers."
On the use of Whito-meters, the minister said they are used in all mechanised laundries to check how effective the cleaning of linen has been. He also said CCTV cameras have been installed across laundries over Indian Railways to monitor operations.
