Sonam Wangchuk stable but needs round-the-clock care amid prolonged hunger strike
Sonam Wangchuk remains stable at Safdarjung Hospital while continuing his fast. Doctors say prolonged weakness demands constant monitoring as his family questions the treatment.
Activist Sonam Wangchuk was stable on Saturday but continued to need round-the-clock medical care and close monitoring because of the strain caused by his prolonged hunger strike, according to Safdarjung Hospital authorities in Delhi.
A health bulletin issued by VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital said his vital parameters were stable and his blood parameters had shown marginal improvement. It added that a multidisciplinary team from Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS, New Delhi, was supervising his treatment.
In the 7 pm bulletin, the hospital said, "Sonam Wangchuk is receiving the required medical care at VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital. His vital parameters are stable. While his blood parameters have shown minor improvement, it requires close monitoring." It further said the treating teams from VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS were of the view that "sustained medical intervention and round-the-clock clinical monitoring remain essential to promptly detect and manage any potential complications" and that all necessary medical care was being provided.
Earlier in the day, Charu Bamba, Medical Superintendent, VMMC and Safdarjung Superspeciality Hospital, told reporters that Wangchuk had been admitted since Friday morning and remained "fully alert, conscious and oriented". She said his vital parameters, including blood pressure, pulse rate and oxygen saturation, were normal. She added, however, that some of his blood laboratory parameters were slightly abnormal, saying they were "just below or above the normal range" and that further investigations were being carried out. "Since he is weak and is still on a fast, he requires constant monitoring and further evaluation," she said.
Wangchuk's wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, earlier moved the Delhi High Court seeking his transfer to a private hospital. She alleged that the family had not been given complete medical information by the hospital and said they did not have confidence in the treatment at the government facility. Hospital sources rejected the allegations and said Wangchuk was being treated according to established medical protocols. They also said his family was being kept informed about his condition and that all investigation details and the medical summary had been shared with them.
