Video: Cop allows 6-year-old granddaughter to drive car, gets confronted by locals

A video of the incident showed the 6-year-old slowly driving the Maruti Swift on a busy road while the police officer sat in the front passenger seat with one hand on the steering wheel.

A Sub Inspector of Police in Hyderabad allowed his six-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter to drive a car on a busy public road on the city's outskirts and was later confronted by local residents who stopped the vehicle. A case has now been registered against the officer, police said.

According to Hyderabad Police, the incident occurred on July 11 on a busy stretch of road. The police officer, identified as Pujari Thirupathi, allegedly permitted the child to drive his Maruti Swift, thereby endangering her safety as well as that of other motorists and pedestrians.

A video of the incident showed the young child slowly driving the vehicle on a public road while the officer sat in the front passenger seat with one hand on the steering wheel. Several vehicles were seen trailing behind the car, unable to move faster because of its slow pace. The vehicle was later stopped by local residents, who questioned the officer over the child's presence behind the wheel.

Following the incident, Hyderabad Police registered a case against the Sub-Inspector for negligent conduct endangering human life and personal safety under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act for allowing a minor to drive a motor vehicle.

Police said the case was registered after the incident came to light and that further investigation is underway.
