Pune medical college student missing for 14 days, family alleges repeated ragging
Missing student Tanmay Wange was allegedly harassed by fellow students, including Utkarsh Singh and Shreya Yadav. His father, Ajaykumar Wange, filed complaints with police and the college administration.
A first-year MBBS student of Byramjee Jeejeebhoy (BJ) Medical College in Pune has been missing for the past 14 days, with his family alleging that he left the hostel after being subjected to repeated ragging by senior students. The college has formed a six-member inquiry committee to examine the allegations, while police continue efforts to trace the student.
The missing student has been identified as Tanmay Wange. His father, Ajaykumar Wange, has lodged complaints with both the police and the college administration, alleging that Tanmay was harassed by a group of students, including Utkarsh Singh and Shreya Yadav.
According to the complaint, the student was repeatedly mocked and humiliated over his rural background after securing admission to the medical college.
Investigators said Tanmay informed hostel authorities on July 18 that he was leaving to visit relatives before walking out of the hostel.
CCTV footage later showed him boarding a train bound for Solapur from Pune railway station. Police said his mobile phone became unreachable after the train crossed Loni Kalbhor railway station.
Internet activity was briefly detected on the phone on July 21 and again on July 23, but no further contact has been established.
Following the family’s allegations, BJ Medical College constituted a six-member committee to investigate the alleged ragging.
Ajaykumar Wange has claimed that the committee’s findings have not been shared with the family so far. He has also alleged that several other parents have complained about their children facing ragging at the institution.
The disappearance has deeply affected the family. Tanmay’s mother has reportedly been admitted to a hospital because of the stress caused by the incident.
BJ Medical College has faced allegations of ragging in the past. Last year, three resident doctors were suspended for allegedly ragging another resident doctor.
In another widely discussed case involving the grandson of Symbiosis founder SB Mujumdar, three resident doctors were suspended and the then head of the Orthopaedics Department, Dr Shirish Bartakke, was transferred.
College Dean Dr Eknath Pawar said the institution is in regular contact with Tanmay’s parents and is collecting all relevant information. Police are continuing the search, and the inquiry committee is expected to submit its findings in the coming days.
