Singer Shweta Mohan broke down on stage while performing S Janaki’s songs at Ilaiyaraaja’s concert in London on July 11, hours after Janaki died at the age of 88 in Mysuru. Janaki’s funeral was held on July 12 and was attended by family members, fans and people from the film industry. Since then, however, some of those who could not attend have faced trolling, including Shweta. Sharing videos from the London concert on Instagram, including the moment she broke down, Shweta explained why she was not present at Janaki’s funeral addressing the trolls.

“So many people are asking me why they didn't see me at Janaki Amma's funeral ... Because I was part of Raja sir's concert in London and we became a fortunate group of people who paid musical homage to her just hours after she left us,” she wrote.

She added, “I don't think I need to explain to the world how difficult it felt to not be able to go see her one last time and take her blessings. To sing through numbness and trying to complete a given assignment of singing songs that were her classics, the reality sinking in more n more with every line being sung.”

Shweta also said that she saw her on video call one last time while the singer was in the ambulance. She ended her note by addressing those criticising her absence. “And for all who questioned me with ‘nakkal’ (mockery), pls know it's a very difficult time emotionally. So, please don't hurt me further,” she wrote.

Her post drew supportive responses from fans. One comment read, “We were there at the concert, and we saw how broken you were.” Another said, “So much respect to you for holding it together. Cannot imagine how you kept your voice steady.”

Singer Rakshita Suresh commented on her post and offered her condolences.

After news of Janaki’s death emerged, Shweta also paid tribute to her on Instagram. “My Queen Janakiamma is no more I have lost a piece of my heart and a portion of my musical soul. I loved her deeply (sic),” she wrote. She added, “I don’t think I can ever recover from this loss. It was very difficult to sing at the concert today after hearing the news that she is no more. But I will learn to turn this pain into a celebration of her life and her work (sic).”

Janaki had been hospitalised before she died of a cardiac arrest on July 11. Her last rites were held with state honours. Her death has left a void in the film industry, and Shweta’s emotional performance in London has become one of the moments through which many remembered her in the hours after her death.
