In view of the large number of crocodiles in the river, the local administration has urged residents living near the riverbanks to remain alert and avoid venturing close to the water. Authorities have appealed to the public to exercise caution to prevent any untoward incidents during the monsoon, when crocodile sightings are known to increase.
This came as Gujarat continues to grapple with extremely heavy rainfall. Surat has emerged as the worst-affected district, with five people losing their lives in rain-related incidents over the past two days. According to officials, four of the deaths were caused by electrocution.
The ongoing downpour has also triggered flooding in several parts of the state, forcing the evacuation of more than 2,100 people from inundated localities to relief shelters.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Navsari, Valsad, Daman and Dadra and Nagar Haveli on Friday. Significant rainfall is also expected in parts of Bharuch, Surat, Dang, Tapi and Chhota Udepur districts. In view of the forecast, the administration has advised people living in riverside villages across these areas to remain alert as water levels in rivers may rise further.
