Gaganyaan update: Centre lists key developments as Isro races to meet launch target
With astronaut training underway and crucial systems now validated, India's human spaceflight programme is moving closer to launch. The latest update outlines what has been achieved and what remains before liftoff.

India's ambitious Gaganyaan programme, which aims to send Indian astronauts into space aboard an indigenous spacecraft, has entered its final phase, with most critical technologies now tested and validated for maiden uncrewed launch, the Centre informed during the Monsoon Session of the Parliament on Wednesday, July 29.
Responding to a question in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Space Dr Jitendra Singh replied that the development and ground testing of the human-rated launch vehicle have been completed.
The propulsion systems for both the Crew Module and Service Module have also been developed and successfully tested, marking significant progress towards India's first human spaceflight.
MAJOR MILESTONES REACHED
The Gaganyaan programme is India's first indigenous human spaceflight mission and is designed to demonstrate the country's capability to safely launch a crew of astronauts into low-Earth orbit and bring them back after a short-duration mission.
The government told Parliament that several key systems have now cleared important milestones.
These include the successful completion of the first Test Vehicle (TV-D1) mission, which demonstrated the Crew Escape System, and extensive qualification tests of the Crew Module, Service Module and parachute recovery systems.
Environmental testing, integrated software simulations and propulsion system hot tests have also been completed or are in advanced stages.
The four Indian Air Force pilots selected as the astronauts for the mission have completed their basic training in Russia. Meanwhile, mission-specific training is yet to commence.
FINAL PREP BEFORE ASTRONAUTS LIFT OFF
Before astronauts are sent into orbit, Isro will conduct a series of uncrewed missions to validate every aspect of the spacecraft, launch vehicle and recovery operations.
The first uncrewed orbital Gaganyaan mission is scheduled before the crewed launch, followed by additional demonstration missions.
In October 2024, the scope of the programme was expanded from three to eight missions, including three uncrewed flights, two crewed missions and subsequent missions linked to the planned Bharatiya Antariksha Station.
The government reiterated that India's first crewed Gaganyaan mission remains targeted for the first quarter of 2027, assuming the preceding tests are carried out successfully.
WHY IS GAGANYAAN IMPORTANT?
Once completed, Gaganyaan will make India only the fourth country after the Soviet Union (presently Russia), the United States and China to independently develop and demonstrate human spaceflight capability.
Beyond carrying astronauts to space, the programme is expected to drive advances in robotics, materials, electronics, life-support systems and precision manufacturing, while strengthening India's domestic space ecosystem through greater participation of industry and startups.
Gaganyaan also forms the foundation for the country's long-term plans, including establishing the Bharatiya Antariksha Station by 2035 and landing an Indian on the Moon by 2040.
