Rai shared the video on his official X account, where he gave viewers a glimpse of the traditional cookies that he received during Modi’s visit to Slovakia.
In the clip, Rai was seen opening a beautifully decorated wooden box containing the Thekua. Introducing the gift, he described it as something unusual and personal that went beyond typical diplomatic exchanges.
Thekua is a traditional sweet snack from Bihar, especially associated with festivals such as Chhath Puja. Made using ingredients like wheat flour, jaggery or sugar, and ghee, the deep-fried delicacy is known for its distinctive texture and decorative designs pressed onto its surface.
He said that during Prime Minister Modi’s visit, he had brought the traditional cookies from Bihar, explaining that they held cultural significance and reminded him of traditional Slovak sweets.
As he opened the box and looked at the pieces of Thekua, Rai admired their appearance and said he could almost imagine their taste. He also pointed out similarities between the two countries’ traditional treats, and mentioned that food often became a way for cultures to connect.
The Slovak leader also reflected on how diplomacy was not limited to formal meetings and official ceremonies. He said that behind high-level receptions and political discussions were often small gestures, such as sharing traditional food, that helped create a warmer atmosphere between nations.
He added that the Thekua gifted by Prime Minister Modi represented a memory of India and emphasised how such exchanges could bring people closer.
Sharing the video, Rai wrote in the caption od his post that diplomacy was also about “small gestures that bring people closer.” He mentioned receiving traditional Thekua from Bihar during Modi’s visit and said he had presented the Indian Prime Minister with Slovak spa wafers featuring Hindi inscriptions in return.
